Leprosy Day Celebration

IADVL Delhi State Branch participated at Dwarka Raahgiri Day on 31st January, 2016 on the occasion of “World Leprosy Day”. IADVL members from all over Delhi – NCR participated in the event. The attendees included junior & senior dermatologists from government as well as private institutions. An interactive street play was performed by some of the members which was received very well by the common public. Dr. Rishi Parashar, President of IADVL – DSB said, “In this age of cosmetic & aesthetic Dermatology, we as dermatologists must not forget the significance of Leprosy and should collectively work towards controlling this menace.” Members also participated in an awareness march, where slogans about Leprosy were raised and awareness material displayed.

Although India achieved leprosy elimination status wayback in 2005, overwhelming majority of Leprosy cases worldwide still come from India. The stigma associated with the disease often destroys the patient’s. Dr. Isha Narang, Resident Dermatologist, Lok Nayak Hospital says, “Even today, most people believe Leprosy cannot be completely treated.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Leprosy can be completely treated by multi-drug therapy which is available free of cost at most government hospitals.
